Eclectic Readers Club

Welcome all bookworms, reluctant readers, and everyone in between!

A reading club is a bit different from a book club. Rather than targeting a specific title each month, it explores different genres and topics, and then each person can track down any book(s) they want to read so long as it matches the given theme. These themes will be picked at random by our local group; you get to create your own chapter (either as a family or a community) and follow along at your own pace – start at the beginning or jump right into the current month. This is meant for all kids at all reading levels, as they get to pick their own material. Being read to or listening to audiobooks is absolutely fine!

If you post about your group, feel free to tag @extraschooling and use the hashtag #EclecticReadersClub. This is a new adventure for us in 2023, and we’d love to share in it with you!

So what do you do across a month? The packet below has all the info, but in a nutshell:

Once you read a book or two (or ten or twenty or whatever floats your boat), you’ll choose a favorite to inspire an extension activity (there are a bunch of suggestions included in the download). You’ll track what you do, then come together to chat; what did you like or dislike about the genre? Was it hard to find a book within the set topic? Have you read anything similar before? Would you read more along these lines? What did you come up with to do based on your reading? Then, look ahead to the next month: how do you think you will feel about the new theme?

Are you ready? Let’s get reading!

Who am I? Foremost, the lucky momma of an amazing boy. To be perfectly honest, I am less his teacher than he is my inspiration - I have learned at least as much from him in the last eight years as he has from me. I am an old-timer at heart; I'd rather live on a farm, garden, crochet, and raise my kid out in the sun than anything else. I'm a bit of a technological dinosaur, more geared toward life where you can get your hands dirty and have some fun exploring, learning, and growing. I'm a homeschooled, homeschooling single parent with a passion for my son, nature, and the simple life. I am not here to pretend I know it all or lay out the research or provide a step-by-step game plan. I hope to encourage and inspire families to join in the journey of learning together - and have the fun that life is supposed to be made of along the way. Happy exploring!
