ERC Month Two – Chapter Books + Local/Regional

Time to dive into chapter books! Whether an easy reader version or a thick tome, whether read alone or listened to, find at least one chapter book that looks interesting.

As a bonus challenge this month, our topic is local/regional. This can mean either the book was set near you or written by an author from your area – or both!

Some series of chapter books that are set in different locations that might get you started:

  • Flat Stanley Worldwide Adventures by Jeff Brown
  • Magic Tree House by Mary Pope Osbourne
  • Real Kids! Real Places! by Carol Marsh

This is a really fun month to get out and explore around your area as your extension activity. Visit a state park, landmark, museum, or similar spot and learn a little local lore or history!

Do be sure to decide ahead of time what you consider “local,” which will likely depend on where you live. If you’re in a big city, there might be a lot of reading options; those in rural settings might need to expand their zone to include their state/province or similar area.

Happy reading!

Who am I? Foremost, the lucky momma of an amazing boy. To be perfectly honest, I am less his teacher than he is my inspiration - I have learned at least as much from him in the last eight years as he has from me. I am an old-timer at heart; I'd rather live on a farm, garden, crochet, and raise my kid out in the sun than anything else. I'm a bit of a technological dinosaur, more geared toward life where you can get your hands dirty and have some fun exploring, learning, and growing. I'm a homeschooled, homeschooling single parent with a passion for my son, nature, and the simple life. I am not here to pretend I know it all or lay out the research or provide a step-by-step game plan. I hope to encourage and inspire families to join in the journey of learning together - and have the fun that life is supposed to be made of along the way. Happy exploring!
